Two policemen in the Brong Ahafo Region have been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment each by the Fiapre Circuit Court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and offering a rifle and ammunition belonging to the Ghana Police Service for sale.General Lance Corporal Adumoah Robert Noye and Darlington King Anum, stationed at Wenchi and Sunyani, respectively, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were arraigned before the court, presided over by Mr Benjamin Osei Yaw.They were, however, found guilty after the trial and were convicted.Police Chief Superintendent (C/Supt) Frederick Kwadwo Adjei, the prosecutor, said on January 10, 2010, Noye booked the rifle, numbered 170067, with 10 rounds of ammunition, for duty at the Wenchi branch of the National Investment Bank (NIB) but he failed to return the gun after close of work. The prosecutor said Noye later called Darlington on his mobile phone and asked him to look for a buyer from Accra for the rifle, which the colleague obliged. He said on the evening of February 21, 2010, they both boarded a bus from Sunyani to Accra to sell the rifle to a so-called buyer. The following day, they went to Achimota, a suburb of Accra, to locate the buyer.C/Supt Adjei said unknown to Noye and Darlington, the said buyer (an informant to the police) had passed on the information to the Accra Regional Police.According to the chief superintendent, while negotiations were going on, the police swooped on them and arrested the two policemen. The prosecutor said the case was later transferred to Sunyani and after investigations, they were put before the court and accordingly convicted.By Akwasi Ampratwum-Mensah Newer news items: Older news items:
