The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon on Sunday condemned the unconstitutional seizure of power in the Central African Republic (CAR) on Saturday.
The President of CAR, François Bozize, fled the country on Sunday, hours after hundreds of armed rebels known as Seleka m invaded the city.
Ban called for the restoration of constitutional order in CAR.
He reiterated that the Libreville Agreements, negotiated by the Heads of States and Government of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) remained the most viable framework to ensure durable peace and stability in the country.
Ban also expressed deeply concern over the serious violations of human rights.
He, however, underscored that those responsible for the violations would be held accountable and appeals for calm and respect of the rule of law in the CAR.
Ban also expressed concerned about the humanitarian situation in the country and the reports of ongoing looting in the capital, Bangui, including UN’s property.
He noted that the UN was taking all precautions to protect its staff and reminded the authorities of their obligations to ensure the safety of all UN personnel and premises.
According to him, the UN will continue to work closely with its partners, including ECCAS and the African Union in joint efforts to help resolve the crisis in the CAR. (NAN)
