Kumasi, March 21, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Security Committee (REGSEC) has urged residents of Kumasi and its outlying communities to go about their normal duties without fear or panic.
It said the security situation was under firm control. The police and the military have intensified their surveillance and patrols to ensure the safety of the law abiding.
This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Samuel Sarpong, out-going Regional Minister and Chairman of the REGSEC in Kumasi on Thursday.
It comes on the heels of the brazen impunity put on display by armed gangs over the last two days – firing sporadic gunshots, terrorizing and robbing people in parts of the metropolis.
That had brought fear to many and led to public expression of concern about the safety of the citizenry.
The statement said investigations carried out by the REGSEC showed that it was a reaction of some hardened criminals to the arrest of their colleagues by the security agencies during recent raids on their hideouts.
The REGSEC reminded the public that the ban on the use of unregistered motorbikes and vehicles was still in force and warned that the police would effectively enforce this by arresting and prosecuting offenders.
It called on members of the public to volunteer information to the security agencies to aid the arrest of the criminals.
