The Clergy Association of Ghana says it is disappointed in Nana Oye Lithur for her performance when she appeared before Parliaments vetting committee on Wednesday.
According to the group, she left most of the questions pertaining to her stance on homosexuality unanswered.
Spokesperson for the group, Benny Woode told Pink News they were expecting her to answer questions on the civil rights of gays and lesbians and not their human rights.
He said they accknowledge the fact that homosexuals have rights but the practice is not accepted in the Ghanaian society.
The group sent a petition to the appointment committee against the nomination of Nana Oye Lithur but it was rejected because it was not signed.
But the group maintains that the appointment committee could have tackled the substance of their case.
Nana Oye Lithur who has been appointed by President Mahama as the minister designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection Wednesday spent considerable portion of her time fighting her position on gayism and lesbianism.
She said never has she said she supported homosexuality and lesbianism except to say that every human being has a right.
This has sparked controversy among a section of the public who still think that Madam Lithur supports gayism, despite saying she stands for protecting their fundamental human rights.
Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Professor Emmanuel Martey is also asking parliament not to approve her nomination. This according to him is because she is a coward and lacks integrity and that her stance on homosexuality and lesbianism is very dangerous to the moral health of the society.
Nana Oye Lithur has come under intense criticism from a section of the public who think she is not fit for her position.
But political science lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Osei Kwadwo Addo has described the attacks on Madam Lithur as unnecessary.
In an interview with Pink News Mr. Osei Kwadwo said her position on the matter is unambiguous and so people should just stop criticising her. ”I know our society frowns on homosexuality but she cannot singlehandedly pass a law to legalise the act. She is only saying she would protect their human rights”. He said.
