The International Council for Clergy (ICC) has raised objection to the President’s nomination of Nana Oye Lithur, a Lawyer and Human Rights Advocate as Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

The Council expressed dissatisfaction about Nana Oye Lithur’s defence for the rights of homosexuals.

A statement issued in Accra on Monday by Archbishop Dr George Slezer Ofori-Atta, Presiding Archbishop of the Council and copied to Ghana News Agency, stressed that ICC is at variance with Nana Oye Lithur position on homosexuality.

It said her position on the issue sought to belittle late President John Evans Atta Mills stand that Ghana would not give credence to or legislate any law to back the practice of homosexuality.

“President Mills stand was and still laudable and a shining example in Africa where Aid from Britain was made a bait for legalising the practice of homosexuality,” the statement said.

“We wish to humbly appeal to the President to have a second look at the nomination of Nana Oye Lithur. We are not by any means attempting to indict the President or are we seeking to twist the President’s hand in his choice.

“We are concerned about her strategic position which is likely to be used by those countries who once sought to use aid as bait to legalise the practice of homosexuality in this Nation.

“This is because they might have found one who is on the same page with them.”

The statement said the Ministry Nana Oye Lithur has been nominated for is a sensitive area particularly dealing with the vulnerable in the society such as children; hence, the need to have someone who would be able to shield and guide them.
