Government urged to effectively implement $75m Global Partnership for Education programme

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition is demanding effective implementation of the 75 million Dollar Global Partnership Education fund to bridge the huge teacher-pupil ratio.

The policy is intended to offer training programmes especially for people form deprived communities to fill the classrooms.

The appeal follows reports of an acute shortage of trained teachers in the West Mamprusi district of the Northern region.

Available statistics indicate that of the 100 kindergartens there 85 are without qualified teachers. The situation is even worse at the Primary level. Of the 120 schools, 113 have similar problems.

National Coordinator of the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition, Lesley Tettey says government must demonstrate extra commitment to guarantee the future of the innocent children especially in deprived communities.

He said many policies proposed to reward teachers have not been effectively implemented and called a more intensified effort to be put into distribution and placement of trained teachers.

However, District Director of Education, Alhaji Mohamed Harune explained to Joy News his outfit is addressing the problem by offering scholarship package for 50 teachers from the area.

Alhaji Harune said a greater chunk of the fund will train more teachers to be posted to deprived communities with incentive packages, to help improve the level of education in those communities.
